TUESDAY NIGHT, JUNE 24th AT THE EMBASSY SUITES IN WASHINGTON SQUARE...7:30PM
Katie Swafford-Lemar is a senior at Mountain View High School in Vancouver who has been battling health problems for her entire life. Because of these problems, she has come up short of the required credits to graduate and won't be allowed to participate in graduation ceremonies or any senior activities.
The Evergreen School Board denied Katie Swafford-Lemar's request for an exception to the district's graduation policy. Katie and her family received the board's eight-page explanation last week, and there's nothing else that can be done.
Katie has cystinosis, a genetic metabolic disease, which has caused her to miss school frequently. She realizes that she has not earned the required credits to graduate, and fully intends on completing her courses this summer and plans on attending college as soon as she receives her diploma.
But she is missing out on walking across the stage to receive her diploma in front of her family. She is missing out on all of the senior activities this week, and all of the celebrations with her friends that she has grown up with the past 8 years.
That doesn't seem fair to us. With all that Katie has been through and managed to accomplish, we believe that she deserves some kind of a celebration.
We have decided to take matters into our own hands. We are going to throw Katie her own ceremony on TUESDAY NIGHT, JUNE 24th AT THE EMBASSY SUITES, WASHINGTON SQUARE AT 7:30PM (Doors open at 6:30PM)... and you're invited!
We want as many people as possible to come and celebrate with Katie and her family and friends.
Please plan to join us -- and bring as many friends as you can find! Katie deserves this, and we want to make this the greatest day of her life.
